Fossils and Scottish Fossil Collecting in Aberlady
South Scotland Geological Guide

A quiet peaceful location where fantastic bryozoans can be seen in carboniferous rocks. You can also find many slabs of 'Trilobite tracks' preserved as they moved across the mud. Fish and trilobites can also be found here.

Location Information

There is plenty to be found at Aberlady, the foreshore rocks are full of Bryozoans, corals and shells. Trilobites tracks are also common here.

(Suitable for children)

Although children can visit Aberlady, they must be supervised as the foreshore is rocky.

   

Aberlady is easy to find, but there is a short walk involved.

Fossils at Aberlady can be found on the foreshore and in the cliffs. However there is strict SSSI rules for this site, you must not hammer the bedrock both in the cliffs or on the foreshore.

Common sense when collecting at all locations should be taken and knowledge of tide times should always be noted. The foreshore is very rocky and so extra care should be made at this location, especially since some of the rocks are quite sharp.

Other Similar Locations

For collecting Bryozoans, Hopes Nose in Devon is another good location, you can also find Bryozoans from Ramsholt and Thorpeness in Suffolk.

For trilobites further locations are; in Shropshire Betton Dingle, Mortimer Forest, Hillend, Wenlock Quarry, Shadwell Quarry, Upper Millichope, Hope, and The Onny Trail. In South West Wales, you can also find Silurian Trilobites from Marloes Sands and Abereiddy

This is an excellent location for corals, other similar locations for Carboniferous Corals are;Parkhouse Hill, Weston-Super-Mare in Avon. Mortimer Forest, Shadwell Quarry, Upper Millichope , Llanymynech Quarry, and Wenlock Quarry, Wenlock Edge in the Shropshire District and Castleton in the Derbyshire district.. Along the South West Coast, you can also collect Devonian Corals from Torquay along Hopes Nose and Daddy Hole. In South West Wales, you can also find Silurian Corals from Marloes Sands. In Scotland, you can also find corals at St Monans

Stone Tumblers (Lapidary)


Stone Tumblers are used for tumbling and polishing rough rock, stones and pebbles including those found on the beach and glass.

Whilst collecting fossils, on those days where you come back empty handed, you could collect rocks, stones and glass from the beach and tumble then at home.

These are all high quality machines to give a professional finish to your samples. The tumblers can be used with a variety of grits, most commonly Silicon Carbide Grit and Cerium Oxide. We have a wide range of rough rocks for sale too.

Microfossils are much easier to collect because they are so small that the vast majority of collections only concentrate on large finds. These small finds can simply be found by taking small samples of sands, crags, clays and soft rocks and examining them under a microscope.

We have a wide range of microscopes for sale, both for the study of fossils, but also educational and professional for use in the laboratory. We have Stereo microscopes, Compound Microscopes, Polarising Microscopes and Monocular Microscopes.
